About Khajuraho
Khajuraho, a historic village in the state of Madhya Pradesh, is famed across the globe for its group of monuments. It has been declared as a World Heritage Site. Taking pride in its overwhelming architectural beauty, Khajuraho has the largest group of medieval Hindu and Jain temples, known for their erotic sculptures. These sculptures are not carved inside the temples but outside. There are several interpretations associated with these erotic sculptures. According to one of the beliefs, one must leave his/ her sexual desire before entering the temple. Another interpretation goes that god is pious like the atma(soul), which is not affected by sexual desires and other characteristics of the physical body. The word Khajuraho means 'date palm'. The captivating temples here dates back to the period between the 9th and the 12th century, reflecting the great Nagara style of architecture.
The bewitching Khajuraho can be best described by using the words 'passion', 'eroticism', 'dance', and 'music'. Most of the miraculous architectural structures of Khajuraho were built during the reign of the Chandela dynasty. Initially there were around 80 temples, now only around 20 are left, the rest of them are almost in ruins. However, even the ruined temples have some special charm about them. Fashioned into mesmerizing structures, the temples of Khajurao were built with sandstone blocks. The temples are divided into two categories: the Western Group Temples and the Eastern Group Temples.
